Poker Chip Tricks 101: The Butterfly

The butterfly is perhaps the superstar of all poker chip tricks. It is a really fancy and wonderful-looking trick. Once you are able to do it smoothly and flawlessly, expect people at the poker table not only to be amazed, but intimidated enough.

The butterfly's grandiose aim is this: using a single hand and a stack of four chips, you roll the chips in such a way that it looks like as if it explodes and separates unto the spaces between your fingers. Mastering this trick will take a lot of time, so our suggestion for you is to be patient.

Here is a step-by-step procedure on how to do the butterfly.

1. We suggest that you become comfortable holding the chips in the way you will hold them in the last position. To do this, clip a chip by the edges using the sides of your fingers. So you should have a face-up chip between all your fingers. Try to be comfortable with this position first, as maintaining this position is perhaps the hardest part of the trick.

2. To begin the butterfly, hold the stack of four chips using your index finger and thumb. Position the stack such that your fingers are approximately in the center of the chips.

3. With your middle finger, pull down the middle two chips. Let the two middle chips fall, and catch them with your ring and pinky finger. If you do this correctly, you will be able to free your middle finger and not make any of the chips fall. Also, you must have two stacks of two chips now: the first stack clipped by your index finger and thumb, the other by your ring and pinky finger.

4. Pull your middle finger towards your palm. After which, you must make the two stacks of chips touch each other by the edges.

5. Push your middle finger outward, dragging the bottom chip of each stack. As you do this, Pull your pinky finger and thumb outward, dragging the top chip of each stack.

6. Push and pull your fingers all the way through, up to the point where you have your hand completely stretched. If you do this correctly, you should end up having a chip in between the spaces of your fingers.

The butterfly is one of the most impressive poker chip tricks. It is also one of the hardest. You will probably drop a chip or two when you begin. But through constant practice, you will eventually have a smooth movement. Once you master the butterfly, be sure to impress and dazzle other people with this explosive poker chip trick!
