Knowing when someone has a mightier hand lets you fold and save your money; knowing when somebody is bluffing lets you play on where you would otherwise fold, so you win more pots.

Poker is not for impatient players. If you are going to the casino to see constant action, you had better not play serious poker. Basic poker strategies require you to fold most hands you are dealt. Wait only for premium hands especially when you are new and the blinds are low. The stronger a starting hand is, the more ways it can win and the more likely it will win.

Observe your opponents as much as possible whether you are in or out of a hand. It goes without saying that knowing what kind of hand your opponent may have would be advantageous. Poker is really a game of skill, not chance.
